CRADLEY TOWN 0 SHIFNAL TOWN 2
West Midlands (Regional) League, Premier Division
Saturday 26 September 2020
Shifnal dominated this game for long periods, the only mystery being how they managed only to score two goals! Home keeper Liam O’Dowd did well to turn Rees Wedderburn’s 25-yard free-kick round the post after just 8 minutes. Then in the 14th minute, the ball fell to Kyle Montague just outside the penalty area, but his shot was narrowly wide. The opening goal came on 18 minutes, when Harry Cunningham passed to Wedderburn on the right, and his cross was turned into the net from 10 yards by MONTAGUE. The only time the hosts threatened in the first period was when Osaze Aigbe dispossessed Jacob Craner in the middle of the field after 23 minutes, held off a couple of challenges, but then fired straight at Jake James from an angle. The visitors were within a whisker of doubling their advantage 2 minutes later, when Jordan Uppal broke on the right, but a defender just beat Tom Hill to his whipped-in cross. The second goal came in the final minute of the first half when a ball from the back was flicked on by Hill for MONTAGUE, who deftly slotted past O’Dowd from 15 yards.
The second half was even more one-sided as Shifnal spurned chance after chance, although O’Dowd saved on several occasions in one-on-one situations. Wedderburn and Brad Sharman were off target in the first 20 minutes, then substitute Jake Webb brought a fine save from the keeper on 68 minutes, in between two one-on-one opportunities for Montague. The visitors’ defence was caught napping in the 70th minute, and Jordan Jones felled Casey Collins in the penalty area. Jake James made a fine save from Chris Bladen’s spot-kick, allowing the Shifnal faithful to breathe a sigh of relief. Shifnal were playing some attractive football, but some of the finishing was woeful. Angelo Franco tested O’Dowd in the 76th minute with a half-volley from Sharman’s crossfield ball, before Wedderburn was thwarted by O’Dowd after 81 minutes, when through one-on-one.
