SHIFNAL TOWN 1 DARLASTON TOWN 1874 0West Midlands (Regional) League, Premier Division
Saturday 3 Octoberber 2020
This was a game of three phases: the first third of the game was dominated by Shifnal until they went down to ten men on 34 minutes. The middle third saw the visitors enjoy more of the ball and the play; then the final third was again dominated by the hosts. Jake Webb was the main danger for Shifnal in the early stages as Darlaston struggled to get out of their own half. Webb saw a powerful 25-yard drive saved at the second attempt by Ryan Cheshire after 7 minutes. Then in the 17th minute, the ball fell to the same player just inside the penalty area, but his low shot came back off the foot of the post. 2 minutes later, Webb swung the ball in from the right, Jay Holdcroft being inches away from getting the touch needed to score. A good run by Jordan Uppal on 25 minutes ended with him crossing for Holdcroft, whose shot was cleared off the line to Webb, but his follow-up was a foot wide. The game changed in the 34th minute when the referee showed Jacob Craner a red card for kicking out in retaliation against an opponent. Shortly afterwards, Webb was sacrificed for Harry Cunningham as a result. The visitors’ first threat on goal came after 40 minutes, when Tom Harley was through on goal, but he shot straight at Jake James. Moments before the break, Harley again found himself through, but he slid his angled effort past James – and the far post.
The second half started somewhat scrappily until a fine 50-yard run down the right by Kyle Peters on the hour ended with a weak shot from an acute angle against the upright. A couple of substitutions livened up the Shifnal side, and for the final half-hour, the visitors were hanging on for a point. It was not to be, however, as Shifnal grabbed the only goal of the game on 75 minutes. HOLDCROFTpicked up the ball midway inside the Darlaston half, left a couple of defenders in his wake, then fired into the far corner of the net from 20 yards. Shifnal could have doubled the winning margin a minute from time, when Kyle Montague cut in from the right before pulling the ball back for Hill, but Cheshire somehow turned his close-range shot for a corner with his foot.
