COVENTRY SPHINX 2 SHIFNAL TOWN 0
Buildbase FA Vase, 2nd Round Qualifying
Saturday 10 October 2020
Despite being the better footballing side for much of the game, Shifnal bowed out of the competition thanks to 2 goals in the space of 4 first-half minutes, and some poor finishing. With a strong wind behind them, the hosts started strongly, and Jamal Adams showed in the 3rd minute that he was a danger, his 20-yard drive just clearing the crossbar. Undaunted, Shifnal hit back 2 minutes later, when some good interplay between Jay Holdcroft and Tom Hill set up Rees Wedderburn, but he side-footed past the post from 15 yards. The opening goal came after 11 minutes as the Town defence were caught in disarray when the ball was crossed from the right for ADAMS to head in at the far post. Sphinx tails were now up and shortly after the goal, Callum Woodward saw his fiercely-struck 20-yard shot saved at the second attempt by Jake James. More poor defending led to the second goal on 15 minutes, ADAMS tapping in at the near post from Woodward’s low cross. From then onwards, it was largely the visitors dictating the play. Midway through the half, Jordan Uppal crossed from the right for Kyle Montague, but his header looped over Jude O’Connor and on to the roof of the net. Montague had a golden opportunity to pull a goal back in the 34th minute from Wedderburn’s pass, but his blast from 12 yards flew yards over the crossbar, albeit with a deflection off a defender.
The wind died down somewhat for the second half, helping the quality of the football. Uppal’s throw into the area after 49 minutes caused consternation in the home defence, as first Brad Sharman, then Wedderburn, had goalbound shots blocked by defenders. Wedderburn then saw his low cross from the left deflected for a corner with two attackers homing in to convert. Sphinx had loud appeals for a penalty turned down by the referee on 59 minutes, as substitute Lewis Noon went down under a challenge from Harry Cunningham. The home keeper mis-judged a teasing cross from Montague in the 67th minute, but Jake Webb was unable to get the ball over the line. A minute later, Uppal unleashed a thunderbolt from 15 yards, which O’Connor somehow turned over the crossbar with his fingertips. At the other end, James made a good save when Madundo Semahimbo made a rare breakaway after 85 minutes. Play switched to the other end, and the ball fell to Webb in space on the left, but his angled drive was turned for a corner by O’Connor.
