Shifnal took a massive step towards promotion with a comprehensive victory over their nearest rivals Bewdley. The visitors would be the first to admit that they contributed to their own downfall with a decidedly iffy defensive first half display. The home side opened the scoring after 5 minutes from a Jordan Jones throw-in, which the Bewdley defence left to each other to clear, ANGELO FRANCO nipping in to head home off the underside of the crossbar. 2 minutes later, it was 2-0, as TOM HILL picking the ball up some 25 yards out from goal, then curling it exquisitely round Joe Sidaway into the far corner of the net. Very little was seen of the visitors as an attacking force, and they were fortunate not to concede again in the 17th minute. Sidaway dropped Brad Sharman’s cross, but he made a good save to keep out Hill’s follow-up. The third goal came on 20 minutes from the penalty spot, after more mayhem in the visitors’ defence. Sidaway dragged Jake Lloyd down, HILL dispatching the spot kick into the bottom corner. Bewdley will not have been happy with the fourth goal on the half hour. A throw-in from Jordan Uppal was headed on by Kyle Montague, SAM PRESCOTT deflecting the ball past Sidaway into his own net. Hill came close to grabbing his hat-trick in the 38th minute with an audacious 35-yard effort which passed just the wrong side of the upright. As the game moved into stoppage time, Sidaway made a hash of a clearance which fell to Jay Holdcroft 20 yards out, but he recovered to save the Shifnal man’s hurried shot.
The hosts could have extended their lead 2 minutes after the break, but Hill’s header from Montague’s cross was straight at Sidaway. Bewdley tightened up considerably in the second period, and with Shifnal perhaps easing their foot off the pedal, very few chances were created by either side.
